PHASE 3:
Build the Relationship

This is the phase when you will build trust with your mentor, as the foundation for your relationship begins. Begin mentoring conversations with your mentor to get them more familiar with your competency development requirements.

Student responsibility

Meetings in this phase will not count towards your minimun two official meetings required for every 12-months of current experience.
  1. PRE-MEETING WORK
    • Confirm meeting with mentor (this meeting should take place 3 months before the date set in PERT either in-person, via teleconference, Skype, Facetime or other live online video conferencing services)
    • LOG INTO: BrightSpace (D2L) and review the material in the "Build the Relationship" section.
  2. DURING THE MEETING
    • Begin conversations with your mentor about your competency requirements and discuss
      the CPA Way . Ensure you understand what is required for completing the "Reflective Questions".
    • Discuss the Enabling Competency Rubric
    • Agree to meet on or before your next mentor review meeting – this date is automatically set in PERT
  3. POST-MEETING WORK
    • Additional tasks: Complete any work assigned by your mentor (if applicable).

Should my mentor document this meeting? No, documenting this meeting in PERT is not required.  Informal meetings in this phase will not count towards your two official meetings required for every 12-months of current experience, see Phase 4: Make Progress.

    • Accept meeting request from student (this meeting must take place 3 months before date in PERT)
    • LOG INTO: The Centre for Mentoring Resources and review the recommended material in the "Build the Relationship" section.
  2. DURING THE MEETING
    • Begin conversations with the student about their competency requirements and discuss
      the CPA Way . Ensure the student understands what is required for completing the "Reflective Questions".
    • Discuss the Enabling Competency Rubric
    • Agree to meet on or before your next mentor review meeting– this date is automatically set in PERT
    • Assign the student any additional work to complete before the next meeting (optional)
